New World Screwworm: What Producers Need to Know

enero 08, 2026

The New World Screwworm (NWS) poses a serious threat to livestock health and productivity—and it’s a challenge no cattle producer can afford to overlook. These parasitic fly larvae invade open wounds and feed on living tissue, causing significant damage. Left untreated, infestations can be fatal.

Recognizing the Signs of New World Screwworms

It only takes a small break in the skin to invite trouble. Detecting an infestation early can be difficult, but close observation makes all the difference. Watch your herd closely for these key warning signs:

  • Changes in behavior: Irritation, head shaking, reduced appetite, or animals isolating themselves from the herd
  • Visible evidence: Maggots or larvae in wounds, or egg masses near the affected area
  • Unusual odor: A distinct smell of decay coming from the wound

If you suspect NWS in your herd, contact your veterinarian immediately. Prompt action is critical to protect both the infected animal and the rest of your herd.

Prevention and Biosecurity: Your Best Defense

When it comes to NWS, prevention is your strongest ally. A comprehensive fly control program should be a cornerstone of your herd management plan, as well as ensuring your handling facilities are well maintained—damaged or poorly designed equipment can cause wounds that attract egg-laying flies.

Reducing fly populations overall can also make a big difference. Maintain good sanitation practices, manage manure effectively, and support animal health through proper nutrition to reduce the likelihood of infestation.

Neogen is proud to partner with producers to safeguard livestock health. Our portfolio of fly control products and expert resources is designed to help you stay ahead of potential threats like the New World Screwworm—protecting your animals and your operation.
