Sampling Kit: Sample collection kit includes cotton swab and DNA/RNA shield collection tube with purchase of test. Sample collection kit comes in packs of 10 swabs, 10 tubes, 2 padded return envelopes, and 5 return labels. Please contact us for sampling kits.

Sample Storage: Samples that have been collected and are secure in DNA/RNA shield collection tube can be stored at ambient temperature. For best results, samples in collection containers should be stored at or below 4°C, and samples should be refrigerated during the collection process.

Shipping: Samples that have been collected and are secure in DNA/RNA shield collection tube can be shipped at ambient temperature. Overnight shipping is required. Please include the completed order form with shipment.

Results are presented as positive (SARS-CoV-2 detected in sample) or negative (SARS-CoV-2 not detected) as an early warning, indicating presence of SARS-CoV-2 under circumstances where targeted wastewater surveillance may be less costly and logistically challenging than case surveillance or where case surveillance through individual testing resources may be limited.

Results are not intended to be representative of the number of confirmed cases in the population represented by the location sampled. Based upon CDC guidelines, SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater cannot currently be used to determine the total number of infected persons in a community or the percent of the population that is infected. More data on SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in the feces of infected individuals and a better understanding of differential shedding patterns of COVID-19 positive individuals are needed to be able to understand the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in wastewater and how many people in a sewer shed are infected (1).

Results are generated using a qPCR-based method to detect and quantify the virus alongside a Human Specimen Control used as part of our quality control along with internal tests conducted to assure data integrity.

Trend analysis results indicate whether detection of SARS-CoV-2 detected appears to be increasing at a location or decreasing at a location, requires a minimum of 3 samples as reported by date at an identically named sampling location, and may be affected with local municipal flow variability. Please contact the governing institution that manages the wastewater system being sampled for additional information on the flow impacts at individual testing locations. One-time sampling will not provide actionable data beyond the presence of SARS-CoV-2 infection within the sewer shed.
