Generating a genetic profile for the foal, dam and sire can enable comparison of the SNP markers to confirm pedigree relationships. Each animal must have a profile in order to compare between offspring and sire or "trio" of dam, sire and offspring.

Parentage analysis enables breeders to confirm pedigree relationships. Testing can also be used by breed organizations help maintain accurate pedigree records and studbooks.

NEOGEN's SNP Parentage test targets over 150 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). These DNA markers are used to create a unique DNA profile or "fingerprint" for the individual. NEOGEN's Equine SNP Parentage test includes markers suggested to the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG) for international adoption.

An individual animal will have two copies of each DNA, or alleles, at each marker site; one from their dam and the other from the sire. Comparing the profiles of offspring to their dam as well as sire enables confirmation that those individuals "qualify" or are "excluded" as a possible parent.

Additional Information

Data generated from samples belongs to the individual who submitted the original sample. NEOGEN must receive written permission from the owner of the data to use DNA profile information for parentage comparison to a horse submitted by a different individual.

This test does not determine breed.
