1 The tolerance level for each of the tetracycline antibiotics has been set by the FDA as the sum of all tetracyclines.

2 The 90/95 sensitivity level was calculated from data collected during validation testing by a third party laboratory. Sensitivity was based on testing multiple levels of each tetracycline antibiotic samples per concentration.


The sample is wicked through a reagent zone, which contains antibodies and receptors conjugated to colloidal gold particles. If beta-lactams, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol or streptomycin are present, they will be captured by their particle-antibody complex. The drug-antibody-particle complex then is wicked onto a membrane, which contains a separate zone for each drug conjugated to a protein carrier. These independent zones capture any uncomplexed drug antibody, allowing the particles to concentrate and form a visible line. As the level of a particular drug in the sample increases, free drug molecules will complex with the antibody-gold particles. This allows less antibody-gold to be captured in the test zones. Therefore, as the concentration of a drug in the sample increases, the test line density decreases. The membrane also contains a control zone where an immune complex present in the reagent zone is captured by an antibody, forming a visible line. The control line will always form regardless of the presence of the drug, ensuring the strip is functioning properly.
