What is Igenity® Canine Wellness?

Igenity® Canine Wellness is a DNA test that identifies genetic traits in dogs and gives veterinarians information that will help anticipate health issues and offer individualized preventive care. It’s much more than an ounce of prevention — it’s a lifetime of improved health.

How does the DNA test work?

The process is simple. A cheek swab is taken during examination and sent to the NEOGEN® Genomics lab. Our team will provide results, along with pet owner education tools to support veterinarian’s relationships with pet parents. We also provide online resources that will help veterinarians comfortably navigate the world of canine genomics, and use this technology to its full potential.

What does the DNA test do?

The key areas Igenity will reveal include nutrition insights, cancer risks, predisposition to several hereditary diseases, and genetic influences on dogs’ behavior. Genomics is an important part of a pet’s medical history and will allow veterinary staff and pet parents to work together to provide the best care possible. Igenity Canine Wellness may reveal genetic risks that can be mitigated by:

  • Taking special precautions prior to surgery for dogs at risk for clotting disorders
  • Recommendations for exercise and lifestyle adjustments
  • Diet and healthy body weight suggestions
  • What conditions to be on the lookout for as the pet ages
  • Special behavior predispositions to keep in mind for training and helping your pet and family live the best life possible

How does Igenity Canine Wellness differ from tests pet owners can purchase online?

Igenity Canine Wellness focuses specifically on genetic traits that are common in veterinary practice and actionable – either preventable or easier to treat by knowing there is increased risk in advance. Consumer DNA tests focus mainly on broadbased screening panels for genetic recessive traits – great as a pre-breeding screen, but if a pet is spayed or neutered it isn’t clinically relevant for the vet if they do carry a recessive trait.

Does this canine DNA test include Breed ID?

Igenity Canine Wellness does not report breed composition and NEOGEN does not offer a breed ID test direct. NEOGEN does provide the lab service for consumer DNA testing companies that offer breed ID and ancestry tests, we’ve provided this type of testing since 2007. Clients can purchase via www.wisdompanel.com.

Can pet owners purchase this canine DNA testing kit online?

No, this product is for veterinary use only and can only be purchased through the veterinary clinic.

What canine sample types are accepted?

Only cytology brushes supplied with Igenity Canine Wellness kit boxes are accepted for this test. Samples must be returned to the lab in the original kit box.

Why were the conditions on the test chosen?

Conditions chosen for Igenity Canine Wellness were carefully selected because they are common and actionable. Additional in-depth breed-specific testing would be recommended for animals that are going to be used for breeding purposes.

How long does it take to get results for the DNA test?

Generally, test results are available two to three weeks after samples are received at the lab. Once testing is complete, results are sent to the veterinary hospital that ordered the test and are available to be shared via email or printed copy to the pet parent at the next exam visit.

What age of dogs can be tested?

Igenity Canine Wellness can be administered at any age!
