USDA approves Neogen’s Reveal® Q+ for DON

LANSING, Mich., April 23, 2012 — The USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) has verified the performance of another of Neogen’s simple and accurate tests for deoxynivalenol (DON). GIPSA’s approval of Neogen’s Reveal® Q+ for DON enables the simple, fully quantitative lateral flow strip test to be used for official testing in the national grain inspection system.

Neogen’s Reveal® Q+ for DON delivers precise results ranging from 0.3 to 6 parts per million (ppm) of DON after only 3 minutes. Reveal Q+ test strips are read in Neogen’s AccuScan® III lateral fl ow test reader to deliver precise results.

Reveal Q+ for DON offers both room temperature incubation of the test strip and storage of the test kit — eliminating the need for an incubator and refrigeration space. The test requires only minimal equipment to achieve precise results and uses a simple water extraction.

DON is produced by the fungi living on cereal commodities such as wheat, corn and barley. The mycotoxin has been shown to produce toxicological effects in certain animals, with varying degrees of sensitivity, and has been implicated in causing problems in processed food, including off-fl avor in ready-to-eat cereals and adverse effects on dough quality.
