LANSING, Mich., July 2, 2008 — The USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) has verified the performance of another of Neogen’s simple and accurate tests for aflatoxin. GIPSA’s approval of Neogen’s Reveal® for Aflatoxin SQ enables the simple lateral flow strip test to be used for official testing in the national grain inspection system.
Neogen’s Reveal for Aflatoxin SQ is the easiest and quickest semi-quantitative test available for aflatoxin, a carcinogenic toxin in grain. In a format similar to a home pregnancy test, all a tester has to do is immerse a test strip into a sample after a simple extraction. The current approval covers the use of the test kit to screen corn samples at 10 parts per billion (ppb).
“Neogen’s tests for mycotoxins have set the gold standard for many years, and our improvements serve to make our market-best tests only better,” said Ed Bradley, Neogen’s vice president of Food Safety. “GIPSA’s approval allows regulators to add our improved test to the expanding list of Neogen’s products they can rely on to ensure the safety of our worldwide food and feed supply. Our newly approved test will be especially useful to those for whom speed is of the essence.”
In only 5 minutes, Reveal for Aflatoxin SQ can return sample test results in the ranges of: less than 10 ppb; 10 to 20 ppb; or greater than 20 ppb using the Reveal AccuScan™ III System. Neogen is the only company that markets aflatoxin tests that use the same extraction to both screen (results that clearly show if the sample is above or below the 20 ppb limit) and quantitate a sample’s exact level of aflatoxin.
Neogen’s Reveal AccuScan III System is an easy-to-use handheld lateral flow test reader combined with a personal data assistant (PDA), and intuitive data management computer software.
Neogen also offers the GIPSA-approved Reveal for DON SQ, which is the easiest and quickest test available for DON. This approval covers the use of the test kit to screen wheat samples at 2 parts per million. After a simple water extraction, clear DON sample results can be read in only 5 minutes.
Neogen Corporation (Nasdaq: NEOG) develops and markets products and services dedicated to food and animal safety. The company’s Food Safety Division markets dehydrated culture media, and diagnostic test kits to detect foodborne bacteria, natural toxins, genetic modifications, food allergens, ruminant by-products, drug residues, plant diseases and sanitation concerns.
