Univ. of Florida, Neogen, and Fort Dodge to host equine disease forums

LEXINGTON, Ky., Feb. 12, 2009 — The recent loss of horses in Florida to an outbreak of equine botulism highlights the need for increased education and understanding of this and other preventable equine diseases, including equine herpesvirus, eastern equine encephalomyelitis, and West Nile virus.

The University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Neogen Corporation, and Fort Dodge Animal Health will be hosting a series of equine disease forums in Florida during the first week of March, to discuss recent developments in preventive equine health care.

Dr. Amanda M. House of the University of Florida, Dr. Bonnie S. Barr of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital (Lexington, Ky.; sponsored by Neogen), and Dr. Kim Kauffman of Fort Dodge Animal Health will be speaking at each of the forums.

“Forums such as these are terrific ways for veterinarians and horse owners to connect on the topic of equine disease prevention,” said Dr. Jennifer C. Newman, Neogen’s Technical Service Veterinarian. “Educating horse owners and caregivers on disease pathology as well as preventive measures has a positive trickle-down effect on the overall health and well-being of the equine population. The veterinarian and horse owner working together can prevent undesirable outcomes.”

Each of the Florida equine disease forums will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. A light meal is included.
