Neogen launches test for ochratoxin in grain

LANSING, Mich., Aug. 8, 2012 — Neogen Corporation has developed a new quantitative test for the mycotoxin ochratoxin specifically for use in testing grain.

Neogen’s new Veratox® for Ochratoxin Grain (product 8630) delivers precise results ranging from 2 to 25 parts per billion (ppb) of ochratoxin after only two 10 minute incubations at room temperature. The new test kit features a common extraction procedure for corn and wheat, simplifying the process for testers of both grains.

The new common extraction procedure for corn and wheat involves the use of a 50% methanol extraction solution at a 1:4 ratio, and a new dilution step that combines the filtered sample extract 1:1 with 50% methanol. Modifications were also made to the test procedure to enhance the robustness of the test across a variety of matrices.

The availability of the improved test for ochratoxin comes as the need for quick, easy and accurate tests for mycotoxins is more critical than ever. Difficult growing conditions in many regions of North America and Europe have increased the probability that molds that produce mycotoxins may flourish in corn and wheat crops. Rapid mycotoxin testing will help ensure the quality of grain crops as they move from the fields, through transportation, storage and processing operations.

Neogen still recommends the use of the existing Veratox for Ochratoxin (product 8610) when testing green coffee and dried fruit.
