AYR, Scotland, 11 February, 2013 — Neogen has developed a rapid lateral flow test for sesame that provides accurate results in just 5 minutes after extraction.
Neogen’s new Reveal® 3-D Sesame test detects as little as 5 parts per million of sesame in rinse waters and on environmental surfaces. The new test is simple to use and provides quick, accurate results that can aid food manufacturers in cleaning validations or verification of existing procedures to prevent cross-contamination of sesame within their manufacturing facilities. Food allergens are proteins in some foods that can trigger an immune response in allergic individuals. Allergy to sesame is increasing, and under the current EU labelling directive (Directive 2000/13/EC) and its later amendments, all prepacked foods sold in Europe must be labelled for major food allergens, including sesame.
“Our Reveal 3-D for Sesame test offers the advantages of the 3-D technology, including rapid time to result — only 5 minutes — and a third line to indicate a very high level of sesame protein instead of simply presence or absence,” said Neogen’s Jennifer Baker. “The new test adds to Neogen’s extensive line of food allergen test kits, which includes rapid quantitative and screening tests for peanut, egg, milk, almond, gliadin, soy, mustard, walnut, crustacea, lupine and hazelnut.”
Neogen’s food allergen testing products have been developed in close cooperation with the University of Nebraska’s Food Allergy Research and Resource Program, or FARRP (www.farrp.org). FARRP is a food industry and university partnership that was formed to provide research and resource tools to the food industry. It is a leading authority in training and educating the industry on allergen awareness.
