LANSING, Mich., Feb. 23, 2017 — Neogen has developed a highly sensitive version of its quantitative microwell test for total aflatoxin that uses a water-based solution for extraction. The new test complements Neogen’s existing aflatoxin test, and will help grain producers and processors meet the requirements for lower levels of aflatoxin in certain global markets.

Neogen’s new Veratox® HS (High Sensitivity) for Total Aflatoxin can deliver precise results ranging from 1 to 10 parts per billion (ppb) of aflatoxin. The test detects the four principle types of aflatoxin, B1, B2, G1 and G2, with superior cross-reactivity when compared to other available aflatoxin tests. Together with Neogen’s Veratox for Total Aflatoxin, testers can use the same aqueous extraction to test samples for 1 to 300 ppb of aflatoxin.

“As with our original test, Veratox HS for Total Aflatoxin delivers precise, fully quantitative test results — and eliminates the need to handle and use hazardous materials in the testing process,” said Neogen’s Mary Gadola. “The popular Veratox microwell format also allows the testing of 19 samples at a time, which is an advantage to high-volume testers who want the benefits of using a water-based extraction method in a high-throughput platform.”

Neogen also offers a water-based aflatoxin test in a simple test strip format, Reveal® Q+ MAX for Aflatoxin. The Reveal Q+ MAX test strips are read in a lateral flow test reader to deliver precise results ranging from 2 to 300 ppb of aflatoxin after only six minutes.

Neogen offers the most comprehensive range of food safety diagnostic test products for foodborne bacteria, mycotoxins, drugs, allergens, and other concerns. Its full line of mycotoxin test kits detect aflatoxin, aflatoxin M1, deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisin, ochratoxin, T-2/HT-2, and zearalenone.

Aflatoxin is considered by many to be the most potent, naturally-occurring carcinogen. The toxin is a by-product of mold growth in a wide range of commodities, including corn.

Neogen Corporation (NASDAQ: NEOG) develops and markets products dedicated to food and animal safety. The company’s Food Safety Division markets dehydrated culture media and diagnostic test kits to detect foodborne bacteria, natural toxins, food allergens, drug residues, plant diseases and sanitation concerns. Neogen’s Animal Safety Division is a leader in the development of animal genomics along with the manufacturing and distribution of a variety of animal healthcare products, including diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, veterinary instruments, wound care and disinfectants.
