LINCOLN, Neb., Nov. 30, 2015 — Neogen’s GeneSeek division has released an improved version of its popular bovine genomic profiler, which has become a global standard in cattle genomics. Improvements include a significant upgrade of its gene marker content.

GeneSeek’s latest version of its Bovine GeneSeek® Genomic Profiler-LD chip (GGP Bovine LD v4) screens cattle DNA for approximately 42,000 markers, of which more than 30,000 are publically available. GeneSeek’s previous version of the array featured approximately 26,000 publically available single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Several important new SNPs have been added to the already extensive list of causative gene markers known to impact disease susceptibility and performance.

“This upgrade to version 4 of our GGP-LD array reflects GeneSeek’s continual innovation,” said Dr. Stewart Bauck, general manager of Neogen’s GeneSeek operations. “The improved version was a result of our continuous collaboration with numerous industry experts and independent researchers, including the USDA-APIL, to add markers that increase the accuracy of the predictive power of our chips — including all markers for the very latest in causative mutations.”

Effective immediately, all samples received at GeneSeek for GGP-LD processing will be processed on the new GGP-LD v4 array.

The improved chip contains all of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) parentage markers, and approximately 4,000 SNPs identified by American Angus Association for their predictive performance in Angus. The following cattle breeds were utilized for SNP selection: Angus, Red Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Simmental, Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire, Guernsey, Nellore, Brahman, Gir, Girolando, Brangus, Beefmaster and Braford.

The GGP-LD was developed to provide an effective, affordable genomic profiler for routine seedstock profiling, selection and management. The GGP-LD offers high-accuracy genomic prediction at about half the price of high-density products, and is an ideal tool to test an entire bull-calf crop and replacement females. It is also being added to the list of GGP products that Illumina will distribute to the global cattle community.

GeneSeek also offers the GGP HD-150K — the most powerful commercial seedstock profiler ever. The GGP HD-150K was developed to become the gold standard of commercial genomic profilers, making it ideal for elite seedstock, donor dams, AI studs and cattle profile data.
