In the supermarket, consumers make decisions about purchasing either organic or conventional foods. Microbes and allergens are less discerning; they don’t care if they’re contaminating organic or conventional food.
In many ways, organic food producers have a greater food safety challenge, since they can’t use some of the intervention methods and anti-spoilage techniques used by conventional food producers. Compounding the issue is the perception by many people that organic food means healthy food. A pathogenic or allergen issue could not only have a severe detrimental effect on one organic food producer, it could potentially taint the image of the whole industry.
