Neogen’s top 4 episodes with Food Safety Matters podcast

March 06, 2019

Since it was established in 2017, Food Safety Magazine’s Food Safety Matters podcast has been an invaluable resource for the food industry. Some of the biggest names in food safety have joined the podcast’s hosts to discuss the hottest topics, from outbreaks to blockchain to metagenomics and beyond.

Among these guests include a few key Neogen experts, offering their insights on some of the latest technology to impact food safety. Today, we’re bringing you the top podcast episodes that feature Neogen voices.

But first, our latest episode — Neogen: Meet MSU’s Food Processing and Innovation Center. We talk about Michigan State University’s new Food Processing and Innovation Center, the first of its kind in the U.S., which will be Michigan’s leading independent commercial food development, processing, packaging and research facility. You can listen to it here.

On to the top four:

1. Listeria Right Now: Innovations in Food Safety
In this episode, Neogen’s Jim Topper stops by to talk about a particular Neogen product: Listeria Right Now, an environmental Listeria test offering molecular-level accuracy with no enrichment. The total time to result on this test is just one hour. The test had been introduced at the annual IAFP meeting that year, and uses new and unique technology to work the way it does. Topper explains how it all works in the context of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Listeria guidelines. Listen in here.

2. Metagenomics: 16S Challenge
16S metagenomics and next-generation sequencing are technologies not everyone understands yet. Neogen’s Joe Heinzelmann, food safety genomics expert, explains what metagenomics can do for a food processing facility — how it can help eliminate spoilage organisms. Heinzelmann also covers a topic that confuses many: the difference between metagenomics and whole-genome sequencing. Find this episode here.

3. Neogen: Why AOAC?
In this talk, Neogen Vice President of Food Safety Research Dr. Rob Donofrio chats with AOAC International’s executive director, Dave Schmidt, about the benefits food safety companies attain when they have their testing methods and kits certified by a third party. The podcast covers both sides of the fence and shows the food industry why this topic should matter to them. Check it out here.

4. Metagenomics: A Fresh Take on Spoilage
In Joe Heinzelmann’s first visit to Food Safety Matters, he talks about metagenomics as an increasingly affordable and practical option for food safety in the food processing facility. Also covered are the use of whole-genome sequencing in outbreak investigations, what the technology really is and how it benefits the world at large. You can find it here.

These episodes should get you started for the next time you find yourself in need of listening material in the car or at the gym. For more of Neogen’s involvement, check out our website, or peruse the entire Food Safety Matters history of engaging, enlightening conversations here.
