The results are in: Around the globe, feed tonnage has exceeded one billion metric tons for the second year in a row, says the
2018 Alltech Global Feed Survey. The total amount of feed produced in 2017? Approximately 1.07 billion metric tons — a 2.57% increase from the previous year. This contributes to a 13% growth over the past five years.
The survey covered 144 countries, including more than 30,000 feed mills. Just as in 2016, China and the U.S. were the biggest producers, making a third of all the feed in the world. Just
behind them were Brazil, Russia, Mexico, India and Spain.
What’s responsible for all the growth? The growth of the animal protein market in general. As more people want to consume meat, milk and eggs, more feed needs to be produced to feed the world’s animals. The pig, broiler and dairy feed sectors are reportedly the markets with the most growth, with Europe and Asia-Pacific being the geographical regions with the most growth. Keep an eye on Africa, the fastest growing region in the world for dairy and broiler feed.
Most industries, including pet food, aquaculture, dairy feed, pig feed and poultry feed, saw growth, but beef feed saw a very small decrease of 1%.
All-in-all, the global feed industry is valued at around $430 billion (USD).
