This DNA hybridisation test employs Salmonella-specific DNA probes directly labelled with horseradish peroxidase, and a colourimetric endpoint to detect as little as one Salmonella CFU in a 25 g food sample when the specified enrichment protocols are used. A sample is considered negative for the presence of Salmonella spp. if the absorbance value (A450) obtained is less than 0.10. A sample is considered positive for the presence of Salmonella spp. if the absorbance value obtained is greater than or equal to 0.10. Positive samples should be confirmed by standard culture procedures, followed by biochemical and serological identification.
