Phosphate Buffer is a water-based salt solution containing potassium phosphate and is effective for stabilizing the pH of water used for dilutions. It is isotonic and non-toxic to cells and, unlike plain distilled water, prevents cells rupturing or shriveling up due to osmosis. It is used in diluting test samples and is called for in diluting water, dairy products, and food for microbiological testing methods.
