Validation Specialist - Microbiology

We are currently looking to recruit a Validation Specialist to join our Technical Services team of our award winning business at Auchincruive near Ayr.

Our team supports the European, Middle Eastern, African & Indian (EMEAI) territories for NEOGEN, a top performing NASDAQ listed business employing around 1800 people worldwide. NEOGEN specialises in solutions for animal and food safety offering a diverse range of products and services for the agriculture, animal protein,
food and beverage industries.

Reporting to the Senior Validation Specialist and based at the Neogen Europe Group site in Ayr, the Validation Specialist conducts testing within the Validation Laboratory for the validation of Neogen microbiology methods for detection of a broad range of microbes in food and environmental samples. The Validation Specialist may serve on project teams under the supervision of senior staff or line manager.

The main features of the role are:

  • Organizes and conducts experimentation, according to approved protocols, to validate the performance of new products or improve or expand the claims of current Neogen products.
  • Performs testing under direction of project team lead, coordinating project efforts with those in Lansing.
  • Ensures on time completion of all projects assigned.
  •  Records daily experimental results and reports to project team leads, immediately reports roadblocks or troublesome data to project team leads.
  • Organizes, interprets, and summarizes data, works with project team lead on statistical analysis, future experimental path and overall conclusions.
  • Troubleshoots validation protocols under supervision of senior staff.
  • Writes validation protocols and reports for internal and external use as appropriate.
  • With assistance from laboratory technicians where appropriate, prepares all reagents necessary for experimentation.
  • Coordinates activities between departments (R&D, Mfg Support, QC) that are essential for validation of products.
  • Orders necessary materials to ensure timely completion of projects. Ensures that all purchases are coded to the appropriate budget and approved.
  • Ensure laboratory safety and proper waste disposal.
  • Responsible for operating under good laboratory practices including but not limited to, equipment calibration and preventative maintenance, data management and reporting.
  • Makes presentations of experimental results at internal meetings.
  • Stays abreast of science related to field of expertise.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • BSc or MSc in either Microbiology, Molecular Biology or related field with previous laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of ISO reference methods for food safety testing is essential along with experience of rapid test kits and platforms.
  • Ability to present and demonstrate technical knowledge essential.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work to deadlines while producing work of a high standard and accuracy, able to prioritise and manage own workload.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects with attention to meeting project milestones and timelines.
  • Able to travel as required, although infrequent.
