Microbiology Technical Specialist - Ayr, Scotland

We are currently looking to recruit a Microbiology Technical Specialist to join our Technical Services team of our award winning business at Auchincruive near Ayr.

Our team supports the European, Middle Eastern, African & Indian (EMEAI) territories for NEOGEN, a top performing NASDAQ listed business employing around 1800 people worldwide. NEOGEN specialises in solutions for animal and food safety offering a diverse range of products and services for the agriculture, animal protein and food and beverage industries.

Reporting to the Microbiology Senior Specialist working with all of Neogen’s current and future microbiology and related products.

The main features of the role are:

  • The microbiology product line consists of both rapid/alternative and traditional methods and covers pathogen and spoilage/indicator testing for use in industries such as food/beverage, cosmetics, household products, nutraceuticals and more.
  • The role is mainly laboratory based therefore requires a good level of practical microbiology skills, be organised and methodical in approach to workload in order to maximise time in the lab.
  • Maintain a safe, well-equipped microbiology laboratory that is used to perform small-scale studies and training on the microbiology product line, adhering to GLP and Health and Safety Procedures.
  • Responsibilities include monitoring fridges and incubators, maintaining equipment, ordering consumables, disposal of waste material, keeping records up to date and recording test results.
  • Perform application studies for potential customers to show how any given Neogen microbiology system performs with their product. Reporting results to Senior Microbiologist Specialist.
  • Participate in product training sessions, as arranged with Neogen staff and/or distributors as appropriate.
  • Respond promptly and comprehensively to technical enquiries or complaints via the appropriate means and co-ordinate the responses.
  • Perform the installation and initial training of certain microbiology systems at the customer site and ensure that appropriate records are kept.
  • Perform the calibration and preventative maintenance of installed microbiology systems where necessary and assume shared responsibility for demonstration equipment checking and updating as required.
  • Provide a monthly report to the Senior Microbiologist detailing projects/complaints/challenges and highlights.
  • Assess own training needs and organise with either external providers and/or internal product specialists at Neogen.
  • Organise travel arrangements for customer visits / installations etc. as appropriate.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • BSc Degree (or equivalent) in microbiology or similar discipline
  • Previous experience in a similar role desirable
  • Ability to plan and manage workload.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Ability to work to deadlines.
  • Ability to contribute to project planning.
  • Excellent time management skills is necessary.
  • Languages would be beneficial
