Job Description Summary

The primary function of the Data Services Specialist is to write and design pieces of communication to facilitate data report generation and delivery. These pieces of communication generally include the development and maintenance of NEOGEN applications based on Sales and Operations provided requirements following Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) best practices and methodologies. The position must develop a good understanding of the business requirements and the impact of different systems that make up and/or support the business to effectively function as an internal resource that links IT, Data Services, and Sales. The position will work with appropriate personnel/management to assure internal applications are of utmost quality and appropriate measures are taken for maintenance and new development as necessary, which includes assisting with documentation of global processes.


This position directly supports Python, MySQL and Mongo database related applications and utilizes SSRS and MSSQL for other reporting needs. There may be call for SSIS support as well. This position will be focused on requirements for maintenance, upkeep and enhancements to start with, and will grow into other applications support.

Essential Skills, Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned

  • Work with lab operations to facilitate data transmittal to customers via SSRS
  • Write reports to help with genetic trait data analysis
  • Provide support to General Manager as needed for IT projects
  • Work with sales and customer service to assist breed associations with data analysis and technical issues
  • Work with various groups for data reformats/structures for further analysis with software
  • Provide quality control review of data
  • Participates in development and use of data systems
  • Record customer related communications into CRM system
  • Maintains ISO and best practice procedures and quality SOPs
  • Generate technical documents for supporting customers and internal departments
  • Follows SDLC methodologies while coding in appropriate languages toward evolving the Genomics and Data Hub system.
  • Prepares documentation (design documents, data flows, business flows, use cases or user stories)
  • Develop systematic and thorough testing during system modification ensuring minimal negative impact upon launch of new development or bug fixes.
  • Works closely with remote development team in consideration of data flow between the various systems.
  • Work with IT group to define and identify system requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and document bugs identifying root causes and defining course for resolution. 
  • Provide user training for users of existing and newly developed applications.
  • Meets individual and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Works with Quality Manager and supports ISO procedures including development, documentation and execution.
  • Works with laboratory, data, and project managers to prepare and implement project plans for ongoing and new system development including; priority, deadlines, potential agile launch schedules.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory application and use of the system.
  • Working with stake-holders routinely update needs assessment and evaluate systems relative to identified needs, improve efficiency and accuracy within operational and business practices, and propose new development projects that support cost reductions and greater efficiencies.
  • Interacts with all levels of management and co-workers in an effective manner.

This individual should have experience with various software packages and development tools including:

  • Databases: MySQL, Mongo, MS SQL (and its tools: Server Manager, Report Builder, Visual Studio / SSIS & SSRS)

Education and/or Experience

BS degree in computing and/or life sciences discipline such as Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, etc. is preferred. Training in data formatting (i.e. excel) and statistics and/or previous experience with MySQL, PERL, or R is a plus.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general science and business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability
