LEXINGTON, Ky., Nov. 3, 2015 — Neogen has instituted an intern program that aims to spread the benefits of the next generation of dairy genomics using the next generation of dairy industry professionals.

Neogen is seeking college interns for the Igenity Dairy Genomics Team of its new Neogen University Program. The Igenity Dairy Genomics Team has been established to instruct both college-level agricultural students and the dairy industry on the latest innovations in dairy genomics.

Neogen operates GeneSeek, the largest veterinary genomics laboratory in the world, and offers genomic tests that deliver highly reliable genomic projections on critical dairy traits. From a simple tissue sample from a day-old calf, dairymen can now know that animal’s future performance on health traits such as net merit, pregnancy rate, productive life in months and somatic cell score, as well as yield traits, such as milk, fat pounds, fat percentage, protein pounds and protein percentage.

“The latest technological advancements in dairy genomics are simply amazing, and provide incredibly useful tools to the dairy industry,” said Carolyn Madson, Neogen’s Dairy Marketing Manager. “We are seeking college students who are looking to supplement their income by learning more about dairy genomics, and then teaching others in the dairy industry. Those chosen will become extremely knowledgeable in the science of animal genomics, and gain a comprehensive understanding of how the complex world of animal health works. They will also learn how to work in a professional environment, and network with department leaders and other professionals in the genomics and animal health world.”

The program begins in November and runs through May 31, 2016. The positions are part time, and feature a competitive combination of stipend and commission pay. To qualify, job candidates must attend one of the following institutions: Chico State University, University of California Davis, Modesto Junior College, Fresno State University, College of the Sequoias, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, or Cal Poly, Pomona.
