Federal investigators have quarantined two farms associated with a dairy cow that presented the U.S.’ fourth confirmed case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or mad cow disease) last week.
The central California farm where the nearly 11 year old dairy cow lived has been quarantined since the confirmation of BSE on April 24. Another farm associated with the dairy where the infected cow lived also is under quarantine, according to the USDA.
One of the offspring of the infected cow tested negative for BSE. Investigators also are looking at the ranch where the infected cow was raised.
Throughout the investigation, the USDA has emphasized the cow was never meant for human consumption and did not pose a threat to the food supply.
