Summer is upon us. And for our family members that have permanent fur coats that means a few extra precautions to prevent overheating.
Here are a few tips to make sure your pets are happy and healthy throughout summer:
- Taking a walk on a hot day? Bring water for you and your pup. Dogs (and other pets) can get dehydrated just like we can.
- Never leave pets in parked cars. Not only is it dangerous and miserable for the animal, it’s also illegal in many states.
- Spring and early summer is heartworm season, and prime time for fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Check with your vet for more information.
- Spraying the yard with pesticides? Keep pets away from the chemicals (most packages will have specific lengths of time to keep kids and pets away).
- You wouldn’t want to walk across hot asphalt barefoot. Your pet doesn’t want to either.
- Avoid heavy exercise during hot parts of the day.
- If your pet is outside, make sure he or she has plenty of shade.
- Not all dogs like the water or are good swimmers. Never leave a dog unattended in the water.
