Selective Breeding of Traits

Neogen’s GeneSeek® subsidiary utilizes high-resolution DNA genotyping for identity and trait analysis of a variety of important animal species through the use of single nucleotide polymorphism discovery and analysis. GeneSeek helps its customers speed genetic improvement efforts, as well as identify economically important diseases inside the farm gate. 

GeneSeek is not involved in cloning or the development of transgenic animals. Instead, the results of its technology allow the acceleration of natural selection through selective breeding of traits such as disease resistance and meat quality.

EPM testing

Neogen’s EPM testing service detects S. neurona antibodies through the use of the Western Immunoblot method. Horses that are considered candidates for EPM should have serum and/or cere­brospinal fluid (CSF) tested for the presence of S. neurona antibodies. Most EPM-infected horses recover if diagnosed early and treated appropriately.

Salmonella Detection

NeogenVet® Salmonella Assay can be used to help ensure all horse contact surfaces in a veterinary care environment, including stalls, barn equipment and halters, are free of Salmonella before exposing a new horse to the environment or equipment. Poultry operations use the same approach to ensure the cleanliness of their facilities before repopulating with new flocks of birds.
