Food Safety
Species Identification Test Kits

The identification of species content allows producers to verify the raw and cooked products they receive from suppliers are safe and wholesome while also protecting against mislabeling. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) has ruled mislabeled meat is considered to be adulterated and is unfit for human consumption.

Neogen offers a range of species identification testing solutions, from our easy-to-use F.A.S.T.® assays, to high throughput ELISAs. Neogen’s F.A.S.T. immunostick tests are included the USDA Laboratory Guidebook as an approved test method.

Neogen’s BioKits for species identification are sandwich based ELISA assays that are very similar to Veratox® Allergen assays.  With a simple extraction and three 10 minute incubations, one can identify the tested species with a limit of detection of 1.0%. This assay is designed for a laboratory or for on-site testing with a limited amount of start-up equipment.

The F.A.S.T.® Species Identification Kits are simple tests designed to allow the resolution of species content in uncooked meats and meat products. The test kits require little equipment and all reagents (except color development reagent) are pre-dispensed. The method is therefore ideal for “on-site” testing, where laboratory facilities are not available, and is more economical for those laboratories with a low sample throughput.

Neogen’s new PCR based tests for animal identification are ready to use kits that have all the materials to amplify DNA. The extraction procedure for these tests uses a proprietary magnetic bead technology that provides significant advantages over other methods of DNA extraction.

Neogen Contract Lab Services: Neogen’s expert, reliable NeoSeek™ rtPCR meat species identification service detects adulteration in raw or cooked samples, feed, or environmental swabs, at levels of 0.1%, or 1%, of mislabeled horse, pig, chicken, beef or sheep meat. Precise quantitative results of the percentage of adulteration of a meat sample are also available. Results are available within 48 hours of sample receipt at Neogen’s GeneSeek facilities in Lincoln, Neb. Neogen also offers ELISA assays for high volume applications.
